Do I need a visa?
Malaysian passport holders may visit Hong Kong visa-free for a stay not exceeding 90 days and visit Macau visa-free for a stay not exceeding 30 days.
You need to apply for a visa unless you belong to the following categories:
(1) According to bilateral agreements, citizens of some countries (List of Agreements on Mutual Visa Exemption between the P.R. China and Foreign Countries) holding appropriate passports may enter China without a visa provided that their stay in China shall not exceed 30 days from the date of entry into China. While in China, they should apply to the department concerned for the extension of the duration of stay in advance if they want to stay longer.
(2) Citizens of Singapore, Brunei and Japan holding ordinary passports may enter China without a visa through the ports of entry open to foreigners provided that they come to China for tourism, family visit, business or transit, and intend to stay in China for no more than 15 days. However, the following personnel of these three countries must apply for a visa in advance if:
a) They are holders of ordinary passports, and come to China for tourism, family visit or business, and intend to stay in China for more than 15 days;
b) They are holders of ordinary passports, and come to China for study, employment, permanent residence or on a news reporting mission; and
c) They are holders of diplomatic and service(official) passports;
(3) Foreigners holding ordinary passports of the countries having diplomatic relations with China and on a tour to Hong Kong or Macao, and participating in group tours to the Zhu Jiang River (Pearl River) Delta Area for a stay of less than six days organized by the travel services legally registered in Hong Kong or Macao shall not need to apply for a visa. The Zhu Jiang River (Pearl River) Delta Area refers to the administrative area of the 10 cities below: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing, Huizhou and Shantou.
(4) Foreigners who have confirmed onward tickets and seats on international flights and directly transit through China and stay for no more than 24 hours within the airport boundaries shall not need to apply for a transit visa.
(5) No visa is required for citizens of the following 20 countries, who transit through China via Shanghai within 48 hours, no matter what type of passports they may hold: Republic of Korea, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Schengen states -- Germany, France, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy.
(6) Citizens holding ordinary passports of the following 19 countries and in group tours to Hainan Province for a stay of less than 15 days organized by the international travel services approved by the National Tourism Administration of China and registered in Hainan Province shall not need to apply for a visa: Malaysia, Thailand, Republic of Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Germany, the UK, France, Austria, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, the Netherlands, the United States of America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
(7) Part of the personnel of foreign airlines offices resident in China and crew members on international flight and trains are exempted from visa requirements or entitled to simplified visa application procedures in accordance with the agreements between the Chinese Government and the governments of their respective countries.
Except for the foreign citizens mentioned-above, all other foreigners shall have to apply for a visa in advance.

Chinese Visa Application Service Centre ("the Centre") is responsible for accepting visa applications for visiting mainland China from
(a) ordinary passport holders who are Malaysian citizens and
(b) citizens of other countries possessing Malaysian permanent residence or work permits. All Non-Malaysian applicants need to be present in person to Kuala Lumpur China Visa Services (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd for their China Visa applications with effect from 21 March 2011. Kuala Lumpur China Visa Services (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd will not entertain any Non-Malaysian's China Visa applications submitted by any organizations or individuals on behalf of the Non-Malaysian applicants.
Applicants holding diplomatic and service (official) passports or eligible for applying for China's diplomatic, courtesy and service visas, or those applying for a visa /entry permit to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China should still apply directly to the Chinese Embassy (the Embassy).
Documents Required
1. Original passport which has more than six months left before it expires from the date of application and sufficient blank pages.
2. One completed Visa Application Form of China (Form V2011A) with a recently-taken passport photo stuck on it; If you are applying to work or study in China, or if someone else travelling with you shares the same passport, or if you are applying for a visa in a country or territory other than the country of your current nationality, you should fill out the Supplementary Visa Application Form (Form V2011B)
Additional requirements
Tourist and family visit (L) visa: (L-visa is issued to a foreign citizen who comes to China for tourist purpose, family visit or other personal affairs.)
1. Applicants of other countries should provide the original and a copy of his or her permanent residence or work permit which should be valid for at least half a year and a copy of the passport first page(except for those who are visa or permit exempt for residing or working in the Malaysia).
2. Applicants planning to tour Tibet should contact the Tourism Administration of the Tibet Autonomous Region (Tel: 0086-891-6834313; Fax: 0086-891-6834632) and provide an Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by it.
3. Applicants applying for special tour to China should provide an Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by China National Tourism Administration or the tourism administration of related province, autonomous region or municipality directly under the Central Government. Special tour includes self-driving, hiking, cycling, horse-riding, hot air balloon, or other expeditions.
Business (F) Visa: (F-visa is issued to a foreign citizen who is invited to China for visit, research, lecture, business, exchanges in the fields of science, technology, education, culture and sports, or attending various kinds of trade fairs or exhibitions, or short-term study, intern practice, for a period of no more than six months.)
1. A letter of invitation from a Chinese company/unit or letter of guarantee from a Malaysian company; An applicant who has made an investment in China or signed contracts with a Chinese company, please provide the original and copy of the Chinese business license carrying the name of the applicant or the contract (The original one will be returned after checking).
2. Applicants of other countries should provide the original and a copy of his or her permanent residence or work permit which should be valid for at least half a year and a copy of the passport first page(except for those who are visa or permit exempt for residing or working in the Malaysia).
3. Applicants applying for short-term study visa in China should also provide:
a. Admission Notice (original and copy );and
b. Visa Application for Study in China (Form JW-201/JW-202, original and copy, which indicates the period of study being less than six months).
Student visa (X) visa: (X-visa is issued to a foreign citizen who comes to China for the purpose of study for a period of six months or more. A foreign citizen who is to study in China for less than six months should apply for a business visa.)
1. Visa Application for Study in China (Form JW-201 or Form JW-202, original and copy);
2. Admission Notice (original and copy);
3. For the applicant who will study in China for more than 6 months shall also provide a Physical Examination Record for Foreigner. Physical Examination Requirements: Government or General Hospital; Kuala Lumpur (Tung Shin Hospital, General Hospital), East Malaysia (any Government Hospital), Penang (Lam Wah Ee Hospital).
4. Accompanying family dependents of personnel studying in China should apply L-visa. In order to apply L-visa, he or she needs to provide proof of kinship, e.g. marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc., and copy of the student's X-visa as well as Residence Permit.
Work (Z) Visa: (Z-visa is issued to a foreign citizen who is to take up a post or employment in China and his or her accompanying family members, or to give commercial performances in China.)
1. Foreigners who come to China to take up employment as experts, scholars, teachers, managerial personnel and as personnel working in related state or local organizations should provide: Permit for Foreign Experts Working in China issued by the State Bureau of Foreign Experts (original); An Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by an authorized unit in China (original).
2. Foreign technical personnel who come to China for Offshore petroleum operations should provide Letter of Invitation to Foreigners for Offshore Petroleum Operations in China issued by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (original);
3. Chief representative or representative of foreign offices resident in China should provide: The registration certificate of resident representative office of foreign (regional) enterprises issued by related administrative department of industry and commerce; OR the approval document for the resident representative offices of foreign enterprises issued by related commercial departments; An Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by an authorized unit in China (original).
4. Personnel who come to China to implement aid or cooperative projects should provide: Bilateral or multilateral agreement between the Chinese Government and foreign government or international organization, for cooperation and exchange; An Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by an authorized unit in China (original).
5. Personnel who come to China for commercial performance should provide: Approval document (also copy) issued by the Ministry of Culture or the Cultural Department of related province, autonomous region or municipality directly under the Central Government; An Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by the Ministry of Culture or the foreign affairs office of related province, autonomous region and municipality directly under the Central Government.
6. Personnel other than those mentioned above should provide: The Employment License for Foreigners issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security; An Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by an authorized unit in China (original).
7. Accompanying family dependents of personnel working in China should provide an Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by the authorized Chinese unit or proof of kinship, e.g. marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc., and a copy of the Z-visa as well as Residence Permit.
8. Applicant who will stay in China for more than 6 months shall provide a Physical Examination Record for Foreigner.Physical Examination Requirements: Government or General Hospital; Kuala Lumpur (Tung Shin Hospital, General Hospital), East Malaysia (any Government Hospital), Penang (Lam Wah Ee Hospital).
Transit (G) Visa: (G-visa is issued to a foreign citizen who is to transit through China on his or her way to a third country(or region) (except for those who are visa exempt.)
A valid visa to and an onward air ticket on international flight to the destination country or region.
Crew (C) Visa: (C-visa is issued to crew member performing his/her duties on board an international train, or on an international airliner, to a sailor on board an international ocean-liner or freighter.)
Related certificate(s) as provided for in the bilateral agreement or as required by the Chinese side, a copy of agreement China Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC), or flight license number and airlines company letter. Crew members of foreign airways who perform duties on international flight operated by Chinese carriers under an exchange program should provide an Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by an authorized unit in China (original).
Journalist (J) Visa:(J-visa is issued to foreign journalists. J-visa has two categories: J-I visa and J-2 visa. J-1 visa is issued to resident foreign journalists in China and their accompanying spouses and under-age children; J-2 visa is issued to foreign journalists who visit China for temporary news coverage.)
1. Applicants for J-1 visa (resident journalist) should provide a visa notification issued by the Information Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry (the media employing the journalist should apply for the visa notification from the Information Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry). His or her accompanying family members need to provide certificate(s) to prove their status as dependants of the journalist.
2. Applicants for a J-2 visa (journalists visiting China for temporary news coverage) should provide a visa notification issued by competent Chinese authorities.
Permanent Residence Visa: (D-visa is issued to a foreign citizen who has been approved by China's public security authority to reside in China permanently.)
The original of the document of approval of his or her permanent residence in China issued by the public security authority in the place where the applicant intends to reside (such an approval should be applied for by the applicant or his or her entrusted relative from the department of Exit and Entry Control of the city or county's public security authority where applicant intends to reside).
Method for Submission
An applicant may submit his or her visa application to the Visa Application Service Centre in person or entrusts someone or a travel agency to submit on his or her behalf. You may book in advance via the Centre's website (www.visaforchina.org/KUL_EN/) for submission. You may be required to go to the Chinese Embassy for an interview if the Chinese Embassy deems it necessary.
Regular visa processing time needs four working days. The Centre also offers the express service or rush service. For express service, visas will be ready for collection at the third working days. For rush service, applications must be submitted before 10:30 in the morning and visas will be ready for collection at 3:30 in the afternoon.

Note:

Period of validity
Unless specifically requested by the applicant in his or her completed application form and approved by Consular Officers, a single-entry visa is valid for three months, and a double-entry visa valid for six months, both with a 30-day duration of stay.
X-visa is usually with a single entry, valid for six months and with no duration of stay. Holders of student visa should go through the formalities for a residence permit at a local public security authority within 30 days after entry into China. The period of validity of the residence permit is its holder's duration of stay in China.
Z-visa is usually with a single entry, valid for three months and with no duration of stay. Holders of work visa should go through the formalities for a residence permit at a local public security authority within 30 days after entry into China. The period of validity of the residence permit is its holder's duration of stay in China.
Unless specifically requested by the applicant and approved by Consular Officers, G-visa is valid for three months with 7-day duration of stay.
C-visa issued is valid for a period of three months and up to one year with single entry, double or multiple entries based on the bilateral agreement or actual needs. Duration of stay is decided by Consular Officers in the light of actual need.
J-1 visa is valid for three months with single entry. J-1 visa holders should go through formalities for a residence permit at a local public security authority within 30 days after entry into China. The validity period of the residence permit is the duration of stay of the J-1 visa holder. J-2 visa is valid for 15 days with single entry, and duration of stay on the visa is decided by Consular Officers in the light of actual need. J-2 visa holders are required to pay a deposit at the Chinese Customs on arrival at the port of entry if they need to bring any professional equipment to work within China. The deposit will be refunded when they leave China.
D-visa is valid for six months with single entry. D-visa holder should go through formalities for a permanent residence permit within 30 days after entry into China at a local public security authority.
Please apply for a visa about one month in advance of your intended date of entry into China, and do not apply six months earlier than your intended date of entry into China. You should take upon yourself any consequences resulting from your failure to submit visa application at an appropriate time, which may lead to either your already-issued visa becoming expired or it would be too late to get a visa before your planned departure date.

2. Foreign technical personnel who come to China for Offshore petroleum operations should provide Letter of Invitation to Foreigners for Offshore Petroleum Operations in China issued by China National Offshore Oil Corporation (original);
3. Chief representative or representative of foreign offices resident in China should provide: The registration certificate of resident representative office of foreign (regional) enterprises issued by related administrative department of industry and commerce; OR the approval document for the resident representative offices of foreign enterprises issued by related commercial departments; An Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by an authorized unit in China (original).
4. Personnel who come to China to implement aid or cooperative projects should provide: Bilateral or multilateral agreement between the Chinese Government and foreign government or international organization, for cooperation and exchange; An Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by an authorized unit in China (original).
5. Personnel who come to China for commercial performance should provide: Approval document (also copy) issued by the Ministry of Culture or the Cultural Department of related province, autonomous region or municipality directly under the Central Government; An Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by the Ministry of Culture or the foreign affairs office of related province, autonomous region and municipality directly under the Central Government.
6. Personnel other than those mentioned above should provide: The Employment License for Foreigners issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security; An Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by an authorized unit in China (original).
7. Accompanying family dependents of personnel working in China should provide an Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by the authorized Chinese unit or proof of kinship, e.g. marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc., and a copy of the Z-visa as well as Residence Permit.
8. Applicant who will stay in China for more than 6 months shall provide a Physical Examination Record for Foreigner.Physical Examination Requirements: Government or General Hospital; Kuala Lumpur (Tung Shin Hospital, General Hospital), East Malaysia (any Government Hospital), Penang (Lam Wah Ee Hospital).
Transit (G) Visa: (G-visa is issued to a foreign citizen who is to transit through China on his or her way to a third country(or region) (except for those who are visa exempt.)
A valid visa to and an onward air ticket on international flight to the destination country or region.
Crew (C) Visa: (C-visa is issued to crew member performing his/her duties on board an international train, or on an international airliner, to a sailor on board an international ocean-liner or freighter.)
Related certificate(s) as provided for in the bilateral agreement or as required by the Chinese side, a copy of agreement China Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC), or flight license number and airlines company letter. Crew members of foreign airways who perform duties on international flight operated by Chinese carriers under an exchange program should provide an Invitation Letter of Duly Authorized Unit issued by an authorized unit in China (original).
Journalist (J) Visa:(J-visa is issued to foreign journalists. J-visa has two categories: J-I visa and J-2 visa. J-1 visa is issued to resident foreign journalists in China and their accompanying spouses and under-age children; J-2 visa is issued to foreign journalists who visit China for temporary news coverage.)
1. Applicants for J-1 visa (resident journalist) should provide a visa notification issued by the Information Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry (the media employing the journalist should apply for the visa notification from the Information Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry). His or her accompanying family members need to provide certificate(s) to prove their status as dependants of the journalist.
2. Applicants for a J-2 visa (journalists visiting China for temporary news coverage) should provide a visa notification issued by competent Chinese authorities.
Permanent Residence Visa: (D-visa is issued to a foreign citizen who has been approved by China's public security authority to reside in China permanently.)
The original of the document of approval of his or her permanent residence in China issued by the public security authority in the place where the applicant intends to reside (such an approval should be applied for by the applicant or his or her entrusted relative from the department of Exit and Entry Control of the city or county's public security authority where applicant intends to reside).
Method for Submission
An applicant may submit his or her visa application to the Visa Application Service Centre in person or entrusts someone or a travel agency to submit on his or her behalf. You may book in advance via the Centre's website (www.visaforchina.org/KUL_EN/) for submission. You may be required to go to the Chinese Embassy for an interview if the Chinese Embassy deems it necessary.
Regular visa processing time needs four working days. The Centre also offers the express service or rush service. For express service, visas will be ready for collection at the third working days. For rush service, applications must be submitted before 10:30 in the morning and visas will be ready for collection at 3:30 in the afternoon.

Period of validity
Unless specifically requested by the applicant in his or her completed application form and approved by Consular Officers, a single-entry visa is valid for three months, and a double-entry visa valid for six months, both with a 30-day duration of stay.
X-visa is usually with a single entry, valid for six months and with no duration of stay. Holders of student visa should go through the formalities for a residence permit at a local public security authority within 30 days after entry into China. The period of validity of the residence permit is its holder's duration of stay in China.
Z-visa is usually with a single entry, valid for three months and with no duration of stay. Holders of work visa should go through the formalities for a residence permit at a local public security authority within 30 days after entry into China. The period of validity of the residence permit is its holder's duration of stay in China.
Unless specifically requested by the applicant and approved by Consular Officers, G-visa is valid for three months with 7-day duration of stay.
C-visa issued is valid for a period of three months and up to one year with single entry, double or multiple entries based on the bilateral agreement or actual needs. Duration of stay is decided by Consular Officers in the light of actual need.
J-1 visa is valid for three months with single entry. J-1 visa holders should go through formalities for a residence permit at a local public security authority within 30 days after entry into China. The validity period of the residence permit is the duration of stay of the J-1 visa holder. J-2 visa is valid for 15 days with single entry, and duration of stay on the visa is decided by Consular Officers in the light of actual need. J-2 visa holders are required to pay a deposit at the Chinese Customs on arrival at the port of entry if they need to bring any professional equipment to work within China. The deposit will be refunded when they leave China.
D-visa is valid for six months with single entry. D-visa holder should go through formalities for a permanent residence permit within 30 days after entry into China at a local public security authority.
Please apply for a visa about one month in advance of your intended date of entry into China, and do not apply six months earlier than your intended date of entry into China. You should take upon yourself any consequences resulting from your failure to submit visa application at an appropriate time, which may lead to either your already-issued visa becoming expired or it would be too late to get a visa before your planned departure date.
