Introduction to Chinese Visa and the Procedure for Visa ApplicationChinese visa is a permit issued to a foreigner by the Chinese visa authorities for entry into, exit from or transit through the Chinese territory. The Chinese visa authorities may issue a diplomatic, courtesy, service or ordinary visa to a foreigner according to his identity, purpose of visit to China and passport type. Hereunder is an introduction to the ordinary visa and its application procedure:
The ordinary visa consists of eight sub-categories, which are marked with Chinese phonetic letters (D, Z, X, F, L, G, C, J-1 and J-2 respectively).
D Visa: issued to an applicant who is to reside permanently in China. A permanent residence confirmation form shall be required for the application of D Visa. The applicant shall apply to obtain this form himself or through his designated relatives in China from the exit-and-entry department of the public security bureau in the city or county where he applies to reside.
Z Visa: Issued to an applicant who is to take up a post or employment in China, and their accompanying family members. To apply for Z Visa, an Employment License of the People's Republic of China for Foreigners (which could be obtained by the employer in China from the provincial or municipal labor authorities) and a visa notification letter/telegram issued by an authorized unit are required.
X Visa: Issued to an applicant who comes to China for the purpose of study, advanced studies or intern practice for a period of six months or above. To apply for X Visa, certificates from the receiving unit or the competent authority concerned are required, i.e., Application Form for Overseas Students to China (JW201 Form or JW202 Form), Admission Notice and Physical Examination Record for Foreigners.
F Visa: Issued to an applicant who is invited to China for visit, research, lecture, business, scientific-technological and cultural exchanges or short-term advanced studies or intern practice for a period of no more than six months. To apply for F Visa, the invitation letter from the inviting unit or the visa notification letter/telegram from the authorized unit is required.
L Visa: Issued to an applicant who comes to China for tourist purposes, family-visiting or other personal affairs. For a tourist applicant, in principle he shall evidence his financial capability of covering the travelling expenses to China, and when necessary, provide the air, train or ship tickets to other country/region after leaving China. For the applicants who come to China to visit relatives, some are required to show invitation letters from their relatives in China.
G Visa: Issued to those who transit through China. The applicants are required to show valid visas and through tickets to the heading countries/regions.
C Visa: Issued to crewmembers on international aviation, navigation and land transportation missions and family members accompanying them. To apply for C visa, relevant documents are required to be provided in accordance with bilateral agreements or regulations of the Chinese side.
J-1Visa: Issued to foreign resident correspondents in China.
J-2 Visa: Issued to foreign correspondents on temporary interview mission in China. The applicants for J-1 and J-2 visas are required to provide a certificate issued by the competent authorities in China.
In addition to providing the above-mentioned documents, an applicant is also required to answer relevant questions and go through the following formalities (with the exception of those stipulated otherwise by agreements):
Providing valid passport or a certificate that can take the place of the passport
Filling out a visa application form, and providing a recent 2-cun, half-length, bareheaded and full-faced photo.
Paying the visa charge.
The Chinese visa authorities overseas include Chinese embassies, consulates, visa offices, the consular department of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in HKSAR, and other agencies abroad authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. If a foreigner intends to enter into, exit from or transit through the Chinese territory, he shall apply to the above-mentioned Chinese visa authorities for a Chinese visa. For further information, please consult the nearest Chinese visa authorities.
Chinese Visa Application1. In accordance with the Law of the People's Republic of China on Entry and Exit of Aliens and other relevant regulations, the aliens who apply for the Chinese visa shall fulfill the following procedures and provide the pertinent documents.
a. Passport with validity for 6 more months and at least 1 blank Visa Page.
b. One completed Visa Application Form.
c. One recently-taken two-inch half-length & full-faced photo without cap.
2. Supplimentary documents are also required relevant to the following:
a. Tourist Visa (L): Itinerary and/or invitation from friends in China.
b. Business Visa (F): Invitation from authorized institutions in China.
c. Student Visa (X): J-W201/J-W202 Form issued by the Chinese Ministry of Education and Letter of Admission by the school.
d. Working Visa (Z): Work Permit or Employment License issued by Chinese Labor Authorities and a statement of confirmation by the employer or a Chinese governmental invitation.
e. Journalist Visa (J): A letter or telegram from the competent department of the Chinese Government. And the notarized and authenticated "Physical Examination for Foreigner" for the applicant of J-1 visa.
f. Diplomatic and Service Visa ( or Official Visa): For the foreign government officials and the staff of diplomatic missions and of the United Nations who traveling to China for official mission or accreditation, an official note from the governments of their respective countries or from the United Nations, and sometimes a letter or telegram or pertinent document from the competent department of the Chinese Government.

5.Application by mail or delivery agencies: A pre-paid, self-addressed return envelope/satchel must be enclosed. This office shall not be responsible for any possible mishandling by the carriers. All fees/charges must be paid in cash only while collecting visas.
*Note: In accordance with relevant agreements on mutual exemption of visa fees, Chinese visas are issued gratis to citizens of the following countries: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Maldives, Pakistan, Poland, Slovakia and Yugoslavia. The Mail/Courier Handling Fee shall, however, not be exempted.
6. Application for Visa/Entry Permit to Hong Kong /Macau SAR of China.
a. Travel to Hong Kong: Visas are not required for tourists travelling to Hong Kong with Papua New Guinea passports, who may enjoy a "3-month visa free visit" with thanks to the Visa Exemption Agreement between Papua New Guinea and Hong Kong SAR. For information about employment or longer stay, or visa requirements for Non-PNG nationals, please address inquiries to the Consular & Visa Office of the Chinese Embassy or the Hong Kong Immigration Department (Tel. (852) 2824-6111, Fax (852) 2877-7711, Web site http://www.info.gov.hk/immd/ for details).
b. Currently there are 36 countries from which citizens can visit Macao free of visa; citizens from other countries can apply for the visa to enter Macao at the airport when they arrive at Macao. 7. For Taiwan Residents who want to visit Mainland China, a Travel Permit will be issued. For those holding the pass for Taiwan Residents, they need to complete an application form and submit 2'X2' photos (for detailed information, please contact the Consular Office of the Chinese Embassy).
8. Failure to meet the above requirements and/or documentation required may results in delaying of the processing. In accordance with the relevant Laws of the People's Republic of China and the international practices, the consul is entitled to request other documents from the applicant, and is also entitled to reject the application.
