Basic knowledge on Chinese VisasChinese visa is a permit issued to a foreigner by the Chinese visa authorities for entry into, exit from or transit through the Chinese territory. The Chinese visa authorities overseas include Chinese embassies, consulates, visa offices, and the consular departments of the office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China (based in Hong Kong and Macao). If a foreigner intends to enter into, exit from or transit through the Chinese territory, he shall apply to the above-mentioned Chinese visa authorities for an appropriate visa. For further information, please consult the nearest Chinese visa authorities. The Chinese visa authorities may issue a Diplomatic, Courtesy, Service or Ordinary Visa to a foreigner according to his identity, purpose of visit to China and passport type.
1. Visa types:
The Ordinary Visa consists of eight sub-categories, which are respectively marked with Chinese phonetic letters F, L, X, C, J-1, J-2, G, and D.
1) F Visa: Issued to an applicant who is invited to China for visit, research, lecture, business, scientific-technological and culture exchanges or short-term advanced studies or intern practice for a period of no more than six months.
2) L Visa: Issued to an applicant who comes to China for tourist purposes, family visiting or other personal affairs.
3) Z Visa: Issued to an applicant who is to take up a post or employment in China, and their accompanying family members.
4) X Visa: Issued to an applicant who comes to China for the purpose of study, advanced studies or intern practice for a period of six months or above.
5) C Visa: Issued to crewmembers on international aviation, navigation and land transportation missions and family members accompanying them.
6) J-1 Visa: Issued to foreign resident correspondents in China.
7) J-2 Visa: Issued to foreign correspondents on temporary interview mission in China.
8) G Visa: Issued to those who transit through China.
9) D Visa: Issued to applicant who is to reside permanently in China.
2. Duration of stay / number of entries
Duration of stay of a visa may vary. It is possible to extend the duration of stay of a visa in China when it is going to expire. Visa is always required wherever you enter the Chinese mainland, even from Hong Kong or Macao.
3. Requirements on the validity of your passport when applying for a visa
There must be at least one blank page in the passport. Pages for endorsements or amendments cannot be used as a visa page.
Single or double entry visa requires a passport valid for at least 6 months. (For some occasions the validity varies). For multiple entry visa, a passport should be valid for at least 9 Months. The period of validity of the passport should always be equal or longer than that of the visa.
4. Accompanying person using the same passport
The photo of the accompanying person using the same passport should be affixed to the form. The full visa fee will apply.
5. Visa validity
A single or double entry visa is usually valid for entry within 3 months from the date of issue. The multi-entry visa is usually valid for 6 months or one year.
6. Where to apply for a Chinese visa
Applicants could come in person or through a third party (e.g. travel agencies) to apply for the Chinese visa. It normally takes 4 working days to process the application. Request of express service could be rejected. Visa is normally not issued on the same day unless the same-day air ticket is presented.
7. Special visa policy
Nationals of certain countries are required to apply for a visa only at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General in their home/residence country. Please contact the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General located at your home/residence before departure.
Requirements for Applying for a Visa1. Those who live within the Helsinki area (including Helsinki, Espoo, and Vantaa) must come to the Chinese Embassy personally for application. People living outside the Helsinki area may apply by mail.
2. Requirements:
I. One fully completed visa application form (downloadable from this site);
II. One recent passport-sized photograph;
III. A valid original passport with blank pages.
IV. Additional documents:
Tourist / visitor visa ------ type L:
Copy of Airline ticket or your travel itinerary (proof of relationship / invitation letter if visiting friends or relatives in China).
Business visa------ type F:
An invitation letter/ fax from a Chinese Government department or companies authorized by Chinese Government.
Work visa -------- type Z:
An employment permit from the Ministry of Labour or the State Bureau of Foreign Experts of China together with an invitation letter from the company authorized by the Chinese Government. (The copies of these letters are needed)
Student visa------- type X:
JW-201 or JW_202 form issued by the Ministry of Education of China and a letter of admission from a Chinese University / College (The copies are needed). If the studying period is less than 6 months, the category of the visa will be F instead of X.
Transit Visa ----- type G:
A valid visa for the country of destination and the letter from the work unit. Duration of transit visa is about 7 days.
Journalist Visa --- type J-1 or J-2:
A letter from the Information Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of P.R.C. or the Foreign Affairs Office of Shanghai or Guangdong Municipality Government and a letter from the work unit.
Special Requirements for Group Visa for Tourists
1. A tourist group should comprise at least 5 members.
2. Confirmation letter / Fax from an authorized Chinese travel agency or tourist bureau.
3. Photocopies of the passports of all group members which should be cut in original passport size. All copies should be machine-readable (clean and clear) .
4. Typed name list of the group in TRIPLICATE. If there is any blank on the last page of the name list, draw a straight line from the left corner down to the right corner.
5. A front page covering information about the group.
6. The serial number given to group members should be listed in order on the group visa form.
7. The group visa form pattern can be obtained upon request. It takes 1 weeks to process a group visa.
8. Group members must hold their original passports when they arrive at the port of entry.
9. If any group member intends to travel alone or leave China individually for special reasons after entry into China, the group organizer must apply a permit through local Public Security Bureau.
Applying For Visa by Mail1. Applications by mail within the Helsinki area (Helsinki, Espoo, and Vantaa) will not be accepted.
2. Only those who live outside Helsinki area (Helsinki, Espoo, and Vantaa) could apply for visa by mail. There are no express services to mailed applications.
3. 10 working days (excluding mailing time) are needed to process the mail.
4. It is advised that your passport(s) should be sent by registered post for security reason and the proof of posting needs to be kept.
5. Material needed in mailed application:
a) the original passport;
b) fully completed visa application form with picture (incomplete forms will not be processed);
c) fully stamped (or enclose 5 Euros--cash for payment of postage) and self-addressed return envelope for sending back your passport by registered mail;
d) The following payment (cash or receipt of payment by bank transfer) must be enclosed in the mail:
I. Visa fee;
II. Mail service fee: 6 Euros;
III. Stamp fee (if applicable): 5 Euros.
e) All other needed documents for applying for the respective type of visa.
6. Mailed applications will not be processed except that the mail fulfills the above required condition.
7. The visa office will not be responsible for any lost mail or delay of service due to the negligence of the sender or the third party.
